Did you read a lot of books in February? I'd love to hear about it in the comments below!

Check out my February wrap up video on my YouTube channel. The books I mentioned are below with links to purchase at three major book outlets. On a budget? Check out your local library or Half-Price Books to see what you can find on the cheap. Thrift stores are also a great place to find books for cheap, although the selection is not as large as a bookstore.

Thursday, March 3, 2016

Happy March my friends! Spring is almost here - and I seriously cannot wait until we have consistently warmer weather. The freeze baby in me is not a big fan of the winter coldness. This month I'm spending some time chatting about my absolute favorite book series of all time - Harry Potter.

I totally understand if this series wasn't for you. But I highly encourage everyone to at least try and read it - especially if you've only watched the movies (a fraction of the content is in the movies). Every time I read this series I focus on something new and I get something new out of it. Just thinking about this month's posts makes me want to read the series over again.

Today, I'm going to rank the books in the series for all of you. This is seriously difficult for me to do since I love aspects of literally every single one. When I read certain ones when I was younger I didn't like them. Reading them again as an adult completely changed my perspective. Just because your favorite might be last on my list, doesn't mean I don't love it and that it isn't an amazing book. So let's give this a try:

1. The Prisoner of Azkaban - this is one is without a doubt my absolute favorite. My copy is beginning to fall apart. This is the last book where there is really any innocence left in the characters. The next in the series makes the characters begin to actually fight one on one with pure evil and takes that innocence away. And if you think about it, it's really the only book where no one dies.

2. The Sorcerer's Stone - the one that started it all. I love reading about Harry finding out that he's a wizard and all of his first experiences at Hogwarts.

3. The Order of the Phoenix - I struggled deciding if this was a good place for the fifth book of the series. However, the more I read this one, the more I love the story and everything in it - except Umbridge. Umbridge is worse than Voldemort in my opinion, but that's a different post for a different time. There are so many things that happened during this book that are essential to the remainder of the series (like the DA and learning about the Order itself). At the same time, I will never get over the ending of this book.

4. The Deathly Hallows - there is so much happening in this one, that I don't know where to begin. It's written perfectly and I swear you feel every emotion possible while reading it. Don't believe me - then you should probably read it.

5. The Half-Blood Prince - I go back on forth on the placement of this one as well. But I loved learning more about Voldemort's past and why he is the way that he is, as well as how Harry needs to move forward to defeat him.

6. The Goblet of Fire - this is the book where I really learned that Harry is sometimes a complete idiot. Regardless though, I still enjoyed reading about the tournament. My only question is why is a tournament that is completely dangerous to students okay for them to do and promote. Literally something I'll never understand.

7. The Chamber of Secrets - the only reason this one is here is because the spiders and snake creep me out literally every time I read it. Thinking about the series as a whole, this book is essential. It's when we first come into contact with a Horcrux - not that we even know what it is at this point.

And there you have it! I'd love to hear what you're favorite is. Let me know in the comments below.

Happy Fiction Friday! The week is over and I'm ready to start a fun filled weekend with some friends. Plus, Penn State plays this weekend and I have some time to curl up with a book (normal things right?!). Today, I'm going to be reviewing 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher. So, let's go ahead and get started.
Asher, Jay. 2007.

General information
Paperback: 336 pages
Genre: Young adult, contemporary
Publisher: Razorbill
Series: No

What it's about
Clay Jenson returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers thirteen cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker, his classmate and crush who committed suicide two weeks earlier.

On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out how he made the list.

Why I loved it
I had heard that this was a great read, but other than that I wasn't really sure what to expect from this book. Oh.My.God. This was an emotionally charged read. For me, it was very eye-opening and I'm very happy I read this book. It's a reminder that we don't always see each other's battles AND that we all play a part in each other's stories, both good and bad. Everything we say and do has an impact on the lives of people around us. I think that this is an important book for everyone to read. We know that outcome of the book, but as readers we learn Hannah's story - and that is so important. I cannot say enough good things about this book!

Why you should read it
I honestly think that everyone should have to read this book. It's a reminder that how we treat each other does matter and has an impact on everyone's lives around us. It doesn't matter that this is a young adult book - it's one of those where I think everyone can get something out of it. Seriously, everyone needs to read this.

My rating
5/5 stars - this book brings up a topic that is not easy to talk about (suicide) and presents it in a way that is eye-opening and shows the emotions and story of the individual. It's such an important message and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I was able to get so much out of it.

Have you read this one? Share your thoughts below.

Welcome back to the next installment of Wattpad Wednesday! This week we're giving a little love to Masked by @MNJGreenHill

Greenhill, M.
General information
Number of parts: 46

Number of votes: 32.2K
Tags: paranormal, action, werewolves, wattys2015

What it's about
Someone is manufacturing and distributing a new drug that is killing Werewolves. Those responsible need to be found before the epidemic gets out of control and the human population discover their existence.

The Alliance have put their hope in two broken individuals.

He is the icy, enigmatic Alpha Commander, responsible for the protection and safety of all packs in the Alliance from any and all threats from Rogues and Humans. He has felt the lonely burden and weight of command for nearly 200 years.

She is a forensic investigator, and human under the protection of the Brandenburg Pack. Ten years ago she was brutally thrown into a world she was blissfully unaware existed. Events from the fateful night still haunt her dreams.

Forced to work together to track down the source of this new drug, both most overcome their prejudices and animosity towards each other to be able to save the lives of innocent Humans and Weres alike.

The question is, can they do this before they kill each other?

Why I loved it
I was pleasantly surprised by this one! Paranormal fantasy books aren't usually the genre I jump into. It's more difficult for me to relate to the characters and sometimes it's too farfetched for me to actually enjoy. Forget about that for a moment - this was a great read! I found myself staying up late to finish this. I needed to know what would happen. I wanted to know what would happen between the two main characters. I wanted to know if they would stop the spread of the new drug. Again, very pleasantly surprised - it was such a great read!

Why you should read it
If nothing else, I think everyone should try and read this. The writer does a great job of voicing the characters and the fantasy portion of this in a fun way. If you're thinking "I don't like fantasy or werewolves or anything to do with this world", I still urge you to try it. The focus is more on the mystery of the drug and how to stop the spread than the whole transform into werewolves portion.

My rating
3/5 - although not my favorite genre, I was still very pleasantly surprised.

What do you think of this read?

Welcome back to another Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish. This week's topic -- finished series that I have yet to finish. I love book series, but sometimes don't always have the chance to read the whole thing. So I'm excited about this week's topic! Here are my picks, in no particular order.

1. The Mortal Instrument Series by Cassandra Clare

Clare, Cassandra. 2007.
I sped through the first book (City of Bones) and loved it. It was fast paced and left me on such a cliff hanger. But I didn't have the other books and my TBR list is forever long. Unfortunately, the series got placed on the back burner. But I'll definitely go back to it.

2.  The Beautiful Bastard series by Christian Lauren

Lauren, Christina. 2013.

Gideon knew. He had demons of his own. And we would become the mirrors that reflected each other's most private wounds...and desires.
The bonds of his love transformed me, even as I prayed that the torment of our pasts didn't tear us apart...

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life, and shatter her heart. For here James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire - and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

Welcome back to #TBT - this week we're reviewing Sycamore Row by John Grisham.

Grisham, John. 2014.

What it's about
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier.

The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly? And what does it all have to do with a piece of land once known as Sycamore Row?

Have you ever heard of Wattpad? It's an online space where unpublished writers can write stories (fiction, nonfiction, drama, fantasy, fan fiction, etc.) - clearly all types of stories. There are tons of talented writers out there - and a bunch of them post their stories on Wattpad. If you've never heard of it, I highly suggested checking it out (click here to do that!).

Due to the awesome-ness of Wattpad, I've decided to begin a new feature called Wattpad Wednesday where I will read and review different stories that are published on Wattpad by various users. So welcome to the first installment of Wattpad Wednesday!

The Cell Phone Swap by Lindsey Summers (@DoNotMicrowave)

General information
Number of parts - 42
Number of reads - 64.3 million
Number of votes - 1 million
Part of a series - yes, but the remaining books are not finished yet

What it's about
Keeley accidentally swaps cell phones with a rivaling high school's star quarterback. Unable to switch back until a week later, she must interact with the arrogant boy passing along texts and voicemails. As she gets to know him better, she realizes there's more to him than sexual innuendos and egotistical comments. But when identities are revealed and secret exposed, will Keeley's feelings remain?

Why I loved it
I'm a sucker for any story that involves technology. There were many points in the story that actually reminded me of I've Got Your Number, so it's not wonder I really enjoyed it! I felt connected to Keeley who, many times, was toeing the line between wanting to know the truth and settling for the lie. She did everything and anything she could to work past the secrets. She proved to the quarterback that he's more than his past and that his past doesn't define him. I loved seeing the characters grow. Lindsey Summers did a great job writing this. I'm excited to read the sequel (also on Wattpad).

Why you should read it
Like I said, it has a similar feel to the story line, in terms of technology to I've Got Your Number, so if you read that, there's a chance you'll like this one as well. While reading, keep it mind that it hasn't been edited nor has it been published. So it's closer to a first draft of the story - which makes it more raw and beautiful.

My rating
4/5 stars

Welcome back to another installment of Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This weeks theme...Top Ten Books that would be on your Syllabus if you taught X 101. I decided to "teach" Fiction 101- although not terribly exciting, there are a lot of books that could be placed on this syllabus. Here are my top ten (with some help from Goodreads...) :

1. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
Rowling, J.K. 1997-2007.
The whole series, because otherwise that would take up 7 of my 10 books. But if I had to pick a specific one it would be The Prisoner of Azkaban. Click the links below for Amazon links of each book for purchase.

The Sorcerers Stone
The Chamber of Secrets
The Prisoner of Azkaban
The Goblet of Fire
The Order of the Phoenix
The Half-Blood Prince
The Deathly Hallows

2. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Zusak, Markus. 2005.
This was an incredible read. My brother even enjoyed it (and he's not a huge reader). Get it here.

Welcome back for yet another rendition of #TBT featuring Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn.

Flynn, Gillian. 2007.
General Information
Paperback: 254 pages
Genre: Mysetry
Publisher: Broadway Books
Series: No - but Gillian Flynn has written two other books (Dark Places and Gone Girl)
Amazon
Goodreads

What it's about
Wicked above her hipbone, Girl across her heart
Words are like a road map to reporter Camille Preaker's troubled past. Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, Camille's first assignment from the second-rate daily paper where she works brings her reluctantly back to her hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls.

Nasty on her kneecap, Babydoll on her leg
Since she left town eight years ago, Camile has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother of to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful thirteen-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed again in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille is haunted by the childhood tragedy she has spent her whole life trying to cut from her memory.

Harmful on her wrist, Whore on her ankle
As Camille works to uncover the truth about these violent crime, she finds herself identifying with the young victims - a bit too strongly. Clues keep leading to dead ends, forcing Camille to unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past to get to the story. Dogged by her own demons, Camille will have to confront what happened to her years before if she wants to survive this homecoming.

Why I loved it
This book was twisted! Not even going to lie about it. Gillian Flynn really knows how to write a book that hooks you right away, and that you have to keep reading to find out what happens. I will be honest though - if I read this one first, I'm not sure I would've ever picked up Gone Girl. When you figured out what happens, I was horrified at how someone could do something like that and involve an entire family. I don't want to give too much away - but you should know that I enjoyed the twisted-ness of this book.

Why you should read it
If you like stories that are twisted but captivating, then this is the book for you! If you like mystery, that's yet another reason to read this book. Once again this book isn't for everyone. If twisted stories make your stomach churn, then maybe this isn't your cup of tea. And that's ok!

Welcome back to #TBT - We Were Liars edition. I had heard about this book, and after reading "Gone Girl", I needed something like this in my life. I heard great things about it, and gave into all the hype and read it. So here its - my review on We Were Liars by E. LockhartLet me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Lockhart, E. 2014.

General Information
Hardcover: 240 pages
Genre: Young adult fiction
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Series: No
Amazon
Goodreads

What it's about
A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends - the Liars - whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.

Why I loved it
I think E. Lockhart is brilliant! I was hooked trying to figure out what was being kept a secret and who the liars were. I wanted to know everything that was happening. The Liars are a group of relatives/friends who spend the entire summer together on the island. You learn about this group and what is going on within the family.

I'm not going to lie - the ending was a close-the-book-in-disbelief ending. Knowing how this book ends, ruins the storytelling and the entire premise of the plot. I can't even talk about the ending and how I feel about it without getting emotional.

Why should you read it
If you like plot twists and fast past books - then this is the book for you! Again, you don't want to know how it ends before you even start the book - that ruins the fun!

My rating
Although I enjoyed this book, I'm rating it 3/5 stars. Yes it was amazing, but I'm still not over the ending, and that pains me.

Have you read this book? What did you think?

I've been so busy this past week that I haven't had a chance to read. I spent some time Baltimore with two of my favorite people seeing one of my favorite music groups. So in honor of them, I wanted to review After by Anna Todd, the first book in the After series.

General Information
Paperback: 592 pages
Genre: New adult, romance
Publisher: Gallery Books
Series: Yes - book number 1 of the After series
Amazon
Goodreads
Todd, Anna. 2014.

What it's about
Tessa is a good girl with a sweet, reliable boyfriend back home. She's got direction, ambition, and a mother who's intent on keeping her that way. But she's barely moved into her freshman dorm when she runs into Hardin. With his tousled brown hair, cocky British accent, tattoos, and a lip ring, Hardin is cute and different from what she's used to.

But he's also rude - to the point of cruelty, even. For all his attitude, Tessa should hate Hardin. And she does - until she finds herself alone with him in his room. Something about his dark mood grabs her, and when they kiss it ignites within her a passion she's never known before.

He'll call her beautiful, then insist he isn't the one for her and disappear again and again. Despite the reckless way he treats her, Tessa is compelled to dig deeper and find the real Hardin beneath all his lies. He pushes her away again and again, yet every time she pushes back, he only pulls her deeper.

Tessa already has the perfect boyfriend. So why is she trying so hard to overcome her own hurt pride and Hardin's prejudice about nice girls like her?

Unless...could this be love?

Why I loved it
I love Anna Todd! She's no literary genius (think Fitzgerald, Bronte, or Austen), but she sure knows how to write a book. For me, an amazing book is one where I can feel what the characters are feeling and feel myself in the book. I felt so much from all of these characters throughout this entire book. To the point, where I read this book multiple times in a single year. Call me crazy, but I love seeing Tessa evolve from this stuck up sheltered girl to someone who isn't afraid to stand up for herself. To really find out what she loves and the type of person she wants to be. To see her grow. After is a book that I'm going to keep returning to because of how it makes me feel.

This book isn't for everyone, and I realize that - it started as a young adult book, but as the series continues some of the scenes become a bit more adult in nature. Anna Todd even said that she gathered some of her inspiration from 50 Shades of Grey. But I love this story line - no matter how frustrated I get with the characters.

Why you should read it
I think that anyone who enjoys a love story like Beautiful Disaster or any of that nature will enjoy this book. Don't let the length of the book discourage you from picking it up - it really is pretty fast paced. Plus who doesn't love a main male character with a British accent ;)

Happy Throwback Thursday (#TBT)! I wanted to start using TBT for providing reviews of books that I read prior to the birth of this blog. So here it is: the first installment of TBT!

I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella (read in 2012)
Kinsella, Sophie. 2012.

General Information
Paperback: 448 pages
Genre: Chick Lit
Publisher: Dial Press Trade Paperback
Series: No
Amazon
Goodreads

What it's about
Poppy Wyatt has never felt luckier. She is about to marry her ideal man, Magnus Tavish, but in one afternoon her "happily ever after" begins to fall apart. Not only has she lost her engagement ring in a hotel fire drill but in the panic that follows, her phone is stolen. As she paces shakily around the lobby, she spots an abandoned phone in a trash can. Finders keepers! Now she can leave a number for the hotel to contact her when they find her ring. Perfect!

Well, perfect except that the phone's owner, businessman Sam Roxton, doesn't agree. He wants his phone back and doesn't appreciate Poppy reading his messages and wading into his personal life.

What ensues is a hilarious and unpredictable turn of events as Poppy and Sam increasingly upend each other's lives through emails and text messages. As poppy juggles wedding preparations, mysterious phone calls, and hiding her left hand from Magnus and his parents...she soon realizes that she is in for the biggest surprise of her life.

Why I loved it
I loved how this story had a modern twist on it through the use of text messages. I thought that the characters were relatable and hilarious. Although it's been a few years since I've read this book, I have read it a few times and still loved it each time. It's one of those books that you see and remember that you really enjoyed it. It's a feel good book that makes me smile and gives me all the feels. Again, this story was great - Sophie Kinsella really did such a great job! Plus who doesn't love love reading about a British businessman ;)

Why you should read it
It's a feel good read about a woman figuring out what she wants and what she deserves in life. If you like Sophie's other novels, I'm sure you'll like this one too. It's probably my favorite by far.

Why I loved it

Happy reading friends! Let's take a look at The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty.

General information
Paperback: 464 pages
Genre: Mystery
Publisher: Berkley
Series: No
Moriarty, Liane. 2013.
Amazon
Goodreads

What it's about
Imagine that your husband wrote you a letter, to be opened after his death. Imagine, too, that the letter contains his deepest, darkest secret - something with the potential to destroy not just the life you build together, but the lives of others as well. Imagine, then, that you stumble across that letter while your husband is still very much alive...

Cecilia Fitzpatrick has achieved it all - she's an incredibly successful businesswoman, a pillar of her small community, and a devoted wife and mother. Her life is as orderly and spotless as her home. But that letter is about to change everything, and not just for her: Rachel and Tess barely know Cecilia - or each other - but they too are about to feel the earth shattering repercussions of her husband's secret.

Why I loved it
Liane is brilliant in hooking you and keeping you hooked until the very last page. I didn't want to put the book down to know what John-Paul's secret is and what happens to all of the characters. I loved reading about all the different characters and their lives. How the seemingly don't have anything to do with each other, but as the book goes on we realize that each character plays a role in each others lives. It just goes to show that you can have a huge impact on someone's life, even if you're only around for a small amount of time.

Why you should read it
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good plot twist, a little mystery and all around intriguing book.

"Push yourself. Don't settle. Just live well. Just live."

This is just one of the many amazing quotes that have stuck with me since finishing Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. It's a reminder that you should never settle for anything in life. Really live your life.

Will Traynor was anything, but ordinary. He had an incredible job and enjoyed sky diving, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, basically anything to get his adrenaline going. He rarely spent his holiday's and downtime relaxing. It was all about the adventure and really living life. Until one day he is in an accident and left a quadriplegic.

How does someone who can know longer do anything for themselves still realize that life is worth living?

That's the ultimate question, and Will's parents hire Louisa Clark to keep Will company during the day. It turns into much more than that. Lou learns of Will's intentions and wants nothing more than for him to realize that life is still worth living. That no matter what life throws at him, he is still capable of the life he had before - just with some modifications.

Lou and Will go through a roller coaster of situations and emotions. Ultimately learning that it's your life and your decision on how to live it.

This book was beautiful. There are only a handful of books that I feel I've read that really resonate with me. That really make me think and remind me of the beautiful life I have. This book is a reminder that no matter what life throws at us, whether it be an accident leaving us to have to rely on other people to do daily tasks, or the death of a close family member, it [life] is still a beautiful thing

We all have so much to live for. We just have to surround ourselves with the right people who are going to bring us up, not tear us down.

"Push yourself. Don't settle." Don't settle for a career you don't enjoy. Don't settle for sub-par relationships. Don't settle for lack of adventure. Don't get too comfortable. Push yourself. Great things can only happen if you push yourself.

Overall, I give this a total of 5/5 stars for make me feel and really understand that even though I may not agree with the decisions people make in their lives, it is their life. And also how we should all be living life each day to the fullest.
